Ground-penetrating radar systems

First of all, the basis for security of railroad track is the reliability of its sub-grade. The timely detection of deformation may be performed by such an effective monitoring tool, as ground-penetrating radar.




The data obtained by the ground-penetrating radar method make it possible to identify hazardous processes for the sub-grade in their start phase, timely neutralize them and take the necessary measures to stabilize the sub-grade.


The operation principle of the «MGS» multichannel ground-penetrating system is based on the emission of electromagnetic momentum and recording of signals reflected from the bedding interfaces of the probed soil, having different electrophysical properties. Such bedding interfaces, for example, are contact between dry and water-saturated grounds, contacts between rocks of different lithologic composition, between rock and material of artificial structure, between frozen and thawed soils, etc.


«MGS» is capable to perform the following tasks at speed range from 0 to 120 km/h:


- determine the thickness and lithological structure of the ballast bed, the contamination of rubble and areas of high humidity;


- detect foreign objects in the ballast bed and sub-grade: large stones, cables, backfilled elements of the track structure, etc.;


- identify the position of the upper boundary of the sub-grade soil and the lithological structure;


- reveal in a sub-grade the areas with the weakened zones characterized by the lowered density and the high humidity;


- determine the location of engineering installations and reveal sites with laid coverings of geotextiles and polystyrene foam.


As a result of all the research, a reliable continuous profile of the probed medium is obtained, called a ground-penetrating radar profile or a radargram. Its analysis makes it possible for the operator to make the right decisions on neutralization of processes hazardous for the sub-grade and to take appropriate repair measures for this.




The distinctive features of «MGS» are its compactness and mobility, which makes it possible to install the system on any removable or rolling unit.


«MGS» makes it possible not only to monitor potentially dangerous deformations in a timely manner, but also to make an objective assessment of the quality of the completed major repair of the track.
