LDM road-rail ndt inspection mobile laboratory

The laboratory is a reworked all-road car UAZ-3163 – Patriot (LDM-1) or LAND ROVER – Defender (LDM-LR), which is renowned for high mobility and excellent cross-country ability. Due to road-rail equipment, the laboratory may travel not only on roads (motorways, cross-country terrain), but also on railway tracks.

The sophisticated design of the probe system provides the most advanced ultrasonic checking patterns.

LDM laboratory is intended for continuous monitoring, diagnostics and inspection of rail defects according to NTD/TsP-1-93 and UIC rail defect classifiers, using data processing systems at a speed of 40 km/h. In the course of its travel, the laboratory also logs the parameters of the railway track section under inspection (coordinates of kilometre posts, crossings, switches, etc.). It generates and transmits the information on railway track condition to respective responsible facilities for their further operation.

For the railways of Russia and CIS countries the laboratory provides diagnostics, rating, monitoring for rail types R50, R65, R75 laid in a railway track with 1520, 1435, 1676 mm gauge. It also provides defect detection for the rails which sizes, material and content conforms to: GOST 18267-82, GOST 24182-80, GOST 7174-75, GOST 8161-75, GOST 16210-77, and GOST 18576-85.

LDM-LR version is equipped with a device which is intended for quick switching from the rail track with 1520 mm gauge to the general European track with 1435 mm gauge. This feature makes it possible to employ the laboratory on almost all railways of Europe and Asia.

LDM laboratory provides logging and documenting of raw inspection data and the results of their processing, as well as real-time presentation of the acquired information. All logging and documenting functions are performed by CRUISE-M or CRUISE-2 system (depending on LDM version).

The sophisticated design of the probe system provides precise positioning of the probe system on the rail head, reduces the risk of the system damage at the switches, and ensures increased inspection speed. Furthermore, the ultrasonic units of the probe system are unified with the ultrasonic units of the NDT vehicles.

On customer's request, LDM-1-P and LDM-1-DPG versions of the laboratory, apart from the NDT system, may be additionally equipped with the track geometry and georadar systems manufactured by TVEMA.

The rail track geometry system employed on LDM-1-P version uses TRACK software which is intended for collection, processing and logging of data acquired during the railway track inspection. The software provides the display of the track geometry data with the diagrams for the relative position of rail threads by height (cant), alignment, and track gauge.

LDM-1-DPG version of the laboratory uses the georadar system which detects the location of the roadbed soil upper level and its lithologic structure, and it locates in the roadbed weakened areas having reduced density and increased humidity. In addition, it locates areas hosting engineering facilities and detects areas with laid geotextile and styrene foam shields. LDM laboratories are equipped with KLUB safety system.

The operation of LDM-LR version of the laboratory based on the all-road car LAND ROVER – Defender was successfully demonstrated in 2012 on the test section in Kirchmoser, Germany, and receives a positive feedback from the German colleagues.

MRK-1 road-rail mobile rail lubricator

MRK-1 is a reworked all-road car UAZ-3163 – Patriot. The road-rail mobile rail lubricator is intended for the lubrication of switches, frogs, and rails in the curves of the station and low-density railway tracks where the use of the rail lubrication vehicles is impractical and economically inefficient.

The car is a unique high-tech rail lubrication system of a new generation, previously mounted only on the carriages. The highest performance of the system based on the intellectual control substantially saves the material and human resources, as well as the time for the rail lubrication which is the crucial process for increasing the lifetime of the carriage wheels and the railway track and for providing the safety of the railway traffic. The superior energy saving effect of the rail lubricator means that the specific consumption of the lubricant does not exceed 0.35 litre per 1 km of the curved rail, irrespective of the travel speed. Another feature of the system that makes it different from other existing lubrication solutions is the minimized environmental impact. This is the unrivalled system.

MRK-1 road-rail mobile rail lubricator comprises:

The rail lubrication assembly comprises the systems for:

• lubricant filling;

• lubricant storage;

• lubricant supply to the nozzles with GPS/GLONASS control unit;

• lubricant supply onto the rails;

• video monitoring and logging of the lubrication process.

LDM-2M road-rail shunting car

LDM-2M shunting car

Produced in 2013 by TVEMA, LDM-2M road-rail shunting car is an economic and effective alternative to expensive (both price and operation) shunting locomotives of the light and middle class.

This car is built on the basis of an all-road car UAZ 2363 Pickup is furnished with dedicated equipment to perform a wide range of shunting operations at the stations and spur tracks including movement of carriages (locomotives), haulage of carriages to the loading areas and repair tracks, their shifting between parks.

Due to the road-rail system which comprises automotive chassis and roller guides LDM-2M can travel both on roads of different categories (including cross-country terrain), and on railway tracks with various gauge values (1435, 1520, 1670 mm). The rail-road system is controlled by the pneumatic circuit which supplies air to the suspension cylinders.

Traffic safety system

LDM-2M like other rail-road cars has a unique traffic safety system. The system features auto-stop braking and navigation in GLONASS/GPS coordinates. It constantly controls the car speed and the driver's vigilance. When the actual speed reaches the allowed value, the warning light and sound alarm is switched on. Unless the driver responds appropriately, emergency braking occurs.

LDM-2M comprises:

• device for travelling on railway tracks;

• shunting device;

• fixed coupler for coupling with a railway vehicle;

• cellular communications device;

• two portable radios;

• two-band locomotive radio for communication with a traffic controller or a station duty officer;

• wire telephone of haul communication;

• flashing beacon;

• device for driving on and off the railway track at places which are not equipped for this.

A set of dedicated equipment for performing shunting operations comprises:

• driver's brake valve;

• compressor plant;

• pressure gauge;

• brake hose;

• coupler.

The coupler, which is unprecedented, was designed by the TVEMA specialists specially for this vehicle.

The man advantages of LDM-2M over shunting locomotives include:

• reduced operation costs;

• independence in performing shunting operations from the track occupancy and traffic schedules as travel to and from the work site is performed on a road.

• possibility to use the car as a fully-featured truck.

Road-rail cars for emergency maintenance

Sudden malfunctions of the railway track, which may potentially result in emergency situations, require immediate elimination and therefore a prompt delivery of the mobile repair crew and tools to the problem site.

Road-rail cars were designed by TVEMA to cope with these tasks.

The road-rail cars for emergency maintenance are built on the basis of the reworked all-road cars UAZ-Patriot, UAZ-Pickup or UAZ (3303, 39094, 3741, 39625, 3909, 2206) and may travel both on roads (motorways, cross-country terrain) and on railway tracks.

They are designed to perform the following tasks:

• surveys and scheduled inspections of low-density railway track sections and engineering facilities;

• scheduled and emergency repair works at the railway infrastructure facilities.

All these cars feature dedicated equipment for mounting/dismounting of the car from the railway track.

LDM-1I road-rail inspection car

LDM-1-I road-rail inspection car is built on the basis of the all-road car UAZ-3163 – Patriot. The car is intended for operational scheduled inspections of low-density and station railway tracks and engineering facilities of the railway transport.

LDM-1I is designed to transport the mobile inspection crew comprising 4 people (including the driver) and the dedicated repair equipment. LDM-1I comprises:

• all-road car;

• road-rail system;

• SSPS KH traffic safety system;

• dedicated equipment set for track inspection:

• inspector computer workstations.

LDM-1T road-rail car for emergency repair works

LDM-1T road-rail car is designed to transport the mobile repair crew and equipment to the place of scheduled and emergency repair works at the railway infrastructure facilities. LDM-1T is available in two versions:

• on the basis of UAZ – Pickup car with up to 5 seats;

• on the basis of UAZ car (3303, 39094, 3741, 39625, 3909, 2206) with 2 - 8 seats.

LDM-1T comprises:

• all-road car;

• road-rail system;

• SSPS KH traffic safety system;

• dedicated equipment set (manual and electric tools for track management, welding and repair works).

AVL-P emergency repair laboratories

Sudden and serious malfunctions of the railway track, which may potentially result in emergency situations, require immediate elimination and therefore a prompt delivery of the mobile repair crew and tools to the problem site.

AVL-P emergency track repair laboratories, unprecedented in Russia and CIS countries, were designed by TVEMA to cope with these tasks.

AVL-P is a reworked road-rail car GAZ-3284, which is known for high mobility and excellent cross-country ability. Due to road-rail equipment, AVL-P may travel not only on road and cross-country terrain, but also on railway tracks.

AVL-P can transport up to 10 people and ensures that the following repair works are promptly carried out: surfacing, tamping, alignment, emergency replacement of defective rails, etc.

The laboratory can be equipped with various equipment, including power tools, for the track repair works. These include: RMK-M rail cutting machine, STR2 rail drilling machine, RG6 hydraulic aligner, DGP 12-200 hydraulic jack, P25-2 rail gap adjuster, ESHP9MZ track tamping machine, EPKZ spike hammers, etc. The power supply for the track repair tools is provided by portable gasoline generators installed on AVL-P.

To perform scheduled maintenance and repair works for catenary TVEMA has developed a special version of the laboratory designated as AVL-K.
